On average around 10-13% of the population is left handed. I am one of those thirteen percent. The very word left in English, comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lyft which means “weak” or broken”. Interestingly, for many years left handed people have endured negative conceptions, so I thought I would look up a few facts about us lefty’s:
Fact: Left-handedness used to be forced to right-handedness due to cultural impact. Sadly, this is the case across the globe. Many children are forced into right-handedness during the formative years. Cultural pressure changed that though with the impact of mass literacy on society. In my own early school years (which was not that long ago) my primary school teachers tried to coerce me into writing with my right hand. My mom (god bless her) did not let them. People who are forced into being right handed can adapt but often get something called Left-Hander Syndrome it is a condition that causes a mental state of confusion. My mom would not let teachers change how I wrote-maybe one of the best gifts she gave me. THANKS MOM!
Left-handed persons use visual stimulus to process information. Research reveals that people who are left-handed do not use the sequential processing style like their right-handed people to process information. Instead they are good at applying themselves to multiple tasks by breaking down information and finding a solution.
